How To Be a Good Poetry Reader
Reading poetry may seem like a simple thing, and sometimes it is. Even so, there are ways to become extra observant so that you fully absorb the meaning of the poem you're reading. Poetry differs from other writing because of its use of poetic devices and figurative language. Things such as similes and metaphors may confuse new poetry readers. Once you get to know about these things and how they work, poetry will become much more exciting than before.
Figurative language is when someone speaks or writes in a way that is not literal. In one poem that we will take a look at, there is a line that says 'Rage, rage against the dying of the light'. Someone that has no idea what figurative language is may think the poet is crazy, but since we know they are not meaning that line to be literal, it's easier to understand. If used correctly, figurative language can bring a deeper meaning to the poem and interest the reader. As you read poetry, you'll need your imagination. Just like any type of writing, it's good to paint a picture in your mind of the story the poem is telling. Don't give up on the poem just because it's not blunt and easy to understand; going deeper into the poem allows you to enjoy it more. Many times, poetry will give you good advice that you can use everyday.
Now that you know how to read poetry effectively, go ahead and try some for yourself. In the next page, you'll find some great examples of poetry.
